Verse One

The hardest thing to do at times, is what we need to
Looking back, I know that's the reason I had to leave you
I couldn't breathe, you suffocated my dreams
And it seems like everything I did would never be
Enough, it was tough giving up on what we could
Become but you drained me so much that I just
Got disgusted, said fuck this, you never loved Chris
And everything I did for me was really for us but
You never acknowledged or even articulated
Appreciation for the foundation that I was making
All you ever did was drain me, yet here I am remaining
By your side, all the time; man this shit is crazy
One day this lady took me by the hand
Gave me a pen, a pad, and a promise to be a better man
She said you're better than everything that you're going through
You can be your OWN help, baby that's what poets do
Her name was Poetry, I ain't let her go since
Even take her with me when I'm performing on road trips
I wish I knew before the only thing to hold me
Back wasn't your lack of support, it was my OWN feet
The greatest thing I probably ever did was leave you
Wanted your permission to shine, but didn't need to
See, I told Poetry that I like how life is lookin
She smiled & turned around and said
"Imagine how it could've been..."

(chorus)

If you had the strength, to walk out that door... (x4)

Verse Two (poem)

The only differences between someone who abuses you physically & mentally
Are that mental bruises are internal & last longer
cast on us shadows of doubt so long we become fearful of sunshine
And sometimes
We become so far gone that we get the nerve to believe we don't deserve happiness
But let me ask you this
If fear wasn't an option, would you still be doing what you are right now?
The answer to that question is why I write now
It took me a while to find out that
Diamonds have value BEFORE they get appraised
And the praises we die to get from some
May lead us to our graves
YOU can be the escape you prayed for
Don't stay where your dreams aren't welcome
Give them the shelter you know they deserve
They'll thank you later
If you have to take a chance on something, it may as well be yourself
You know you deserve it
Have the nerve to take your own turn at destiny
You are your best bet
But for that to work, you gotta take the first step
If you have to take a chance on something it may as well be yourself
You deserve it
Have the nerve to take your turn at destiny
You are your best bet
But for that... you gotta take the first step

(chorus)
